Memorial Weekend

Alrighty then.  Had a lovely BBQ yesterday but, before we started the lovely food fest, we made a ‘quick’ trip to the Home Depot.  Bill said, and I quote, “It won’t take more that 30 minutes, I’ll order it real quick.”  Mmmmhmmm.

First off, I know Bill.  I have been to Home Depots so often, that for a while, people actually thought I worked at the one closest to us.  I didn’t.  But, when you spend hours, not one or two, but 3 or 4 hours in a store at time, it leads people to think things.  Bill, bless his little ol’ heart, could spend days in a home improvement store and not notice.  Most of those stores seem to have an unadvertised cover charge.  I have never seen Bill go into one without spending at least $100.00 and taking at least 2 hours.  Until yesterday.  Bill did not make his 30 minute time, but he did set his own personal best time record by being out of the store in a mere 90 minutes.  I should be proud, but, after 20 minutes of dealing with the boys arguing and fighting, while I looked at the shrubbery, I just gave up and hauled everyone out to the car.  We had a lovely time.

First, we counted the number of people who went into the store that had on wranglers & boots.  Then only people who came out with plants.  People who drove trucks vs. people in SUV’s.  Trucks won in case you wondered.  I know, you are so jealous of my exciting and fun-filled life:)

Anyway, Bill did appear, eventually, and with a lovely receipt for all of the fencing materials.  They will be delivered Friday. Sometime. It’s a guess as to when, but that is just part of the exciting service that they offer. 🙂 Good thing we don’t have plans.

Now, the rumor was that the gutter guy was coming today.  I think maybe Chris forgot about the holiday.  So, I am not counting on it, but if anyone shows up to work, I’ll be thrilled.  The new estimate is that the house will be done by Wednesday.  I am going with Friday or Saturday.  That does not count any painting, which Bill will have to do himself, as he gets time.  But, it is coming together.  We are going to try one more time to get ahold of the company that jacked up the columns.  If they don’t respond this time, I get to go down and sue them for the 4th column, which was not jacked up the way it was supposed to be.  Now, its just jacked up in the bad sense.  It looks worse now.

I think I should state, again for the record, I just love contractors:)  Actually, I do like Chris, who would be the roofer.

Although, even with all the issues, mostly with Mother Nature, I do find it pretty amusing that this week, so far at least, looks pretty dry weather wise.  Other than tomorrow, but nothing that should slow down progress.

Today, is supposed to be pretty nice, a bit on the warm side, but nice enough that I should be able to take the boys outside.  Other than a bit of cleaning, that is all that is on the list for today:)

We have Shingles!

I have been a bit lazy since last week, but I have a very good excuse.  The roofers did in fact arrive and finally got started on the tear off on Saturday.  They got an amazing amount done.  However, they didn’t get to the Flat roof (right in the middle of the top of the roof,  there is a hatch that you can use to get on the roof from the basement).  Saturday night, Mother Nature decided that she wanted to kick up her heels at bit.  And she did.

The roofers stayed until about 5:30 pm,  they wanted to work until they had to quit.  It was quite easy to see the storm coming in and it looked alot like the opening seen from ‘ Something Wicked This Way Comes’.  The clouds were just rolling, more of a boil, really. Anyway, they took off about 15 minutes before the first Severe Thunderstorm warning was issued.  The Winds kicked up enough, that some of the plywood or MDF,  I think I am supposed to call it, started blowing around.  So did the tarps.  I sent Bill out to find something heavy to weigh down that stuff.  Where they had it stacked is just outside an area that goes between my house and the neighbors.  The wind really funnels through there and the stacks of wood, shingles, flashing, and other things was right on the other side.  Luckily, we have a big bush and several trees that stopped most of the stuff from taking off and ending up in Nebraska.  We ended up, watching the storm, on TV.  It was one Tornado warning after another.  I didn’t hear our sirens in town go off, but we were under a warning for a while.  But, we were sandwiched between two super cells.  It was a long night.  We had the boys keep their shoes on and stay with us downstairs, even though they stayed up hours after their bedtime.  Our basement is not finished and I wouldn’t go into without shoes unless I didnt’ have any other choice.  So, from April to August, I keep shoes right outside the basement door.  I also keep a bra hanging on the backside of the door, just in case, you never know when you may end up down there without and really want on.   We fared better than alot of folks over the weekend, which brings me to my next issue.

Joplin, Missouri.

Sunday morning the Alarm went off and the first thing I heard was ‘Just devastating, We repeat that most of Joplin is gone this morning after a devastating F5 Tornado struck”.  OMG!

I was in shock.  I finally got the boys around and settled enough so I could turn on the TV.  The first pictures I saw was of St. Johns hospital.  I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing.  I spent alot of time growing up, visiting that hospital.  My doctor was right down the street from the hospital.  I know alot of people who live there.  I had to turn  the channel and go outside for a minute.

Yesterday, since Bill was off, we had to go and do finishing the shopping.  It started storming while we were in the first store, so when we got to the second store to get meat, the boys and I stayed in the car since it was pouring.

The downpour turned into a severe storm pretty fast.  It started hailing.  The boys started screaming.  It was a little scary for about 10 minutes.  It was still pouring when Bill made it back to the car.  We rushed home to find,  Chris, the contractor, at our house waiting.  He came all the way up, in the storm, to check for leaks.  Talk about outstanding!.  I am happy to report, there are NO leaks 🙂  But, since it is storming again today, the gutter guys won’t be able to get out here till Thursday.  Which is fine, I guess, the carpenter guys will be back tomorrow too.  So, everyone should be done this weekend. Which leaves us with painting the porch & putting up the fence.

My irises were destroyed, my yarrow is mostly gone.  What was a 4′ x 4′ patch is down to about 2 small plants, that I hope will survive.  My tulips were also destroyed.  I think they will be okay, because only the leaves were left anyway and the bulbs should be okay for next year.  My baby Maple tree in the front suffered 2 broken branches, neither of them major ones, so it will live.  They killed the peas.  The green beans didn’t make it either, but I think that was because we planted to early.  But, my spinach is fine & should be ready to start picking next week.

So, we have some replanting to do. No big deal.  There is still alot of growing season left.

That’s it for now, it looks like we are about to get nailed with another storm, so I had better shut this down and make sure everyone has on their shoes, just in case:)

Finally!

Shopping Even I can Like:)

I hate wasting my time, I am sure most people feel the same way.  I do most of my shopping online, with the exception of groceries.  I love to find the best price, but I hate having to have 4 or 5 browsers open, so I can compare prices.  I think that those days are finally over for me!  I was made aware of a website www.become.com that seems to do all of the leg work for me.  Not only can I compare prices, but if I am looking for something that I would want to see in person, www.become.com has a feature that will show me where I can purchase the product locally.  It even shows a map and store information.  Nice.

My husband does alot of his home improvement shopping online with a few of the major chains.  Our computer is not the fastest in the world and when you have several browsers open to very large websites, it takes forever to load and switch between pages.  He came in and saw me looking at some comforter sets and he wanted to look at nail guns. Typical, lol he is planning on building the wooden fence in about 2 weeks, and he wants another nail gun.  So, I let him sit down and see what he could find.  The results for just typing in ‘Nail Gun’ came up with 523 items.  All of them were nail guns.  A lot of sites don’t do that.   He loved that he could sort them by brand, price, user rating and store.  He loves checking ratings.   Once I was able to get him off the computer so I could go back to what I was searching for, which was wedding gifts, I found something I really love!.

If you look at the top right hand corner of the home page for www.become.com you will see a category called “Hot Products”.  Wow! I think that is word that sums it up best.  See, I really don’t know what I should be getting the happy couple for a wedding present, I don’t have any ideas at all.  Or rather, I didn’t.   Just by clicking on “Hot Products” www.become.com brought up 15 items, that to be honest, I would not have thought about.  Now, granted, I don’t think I will be buying the happy couple a new bedroom set, but I had not even considered luggage, which I probably won’t get them either.  But, the camera, sonic toothbrush and table clothes are all in the running:)

Something else that I am starting to find helpful is the Shop or Research buttons.  You can also check out buying guides and www.become.com has a coupon section!  I love coupons.   I can see that this will be a site we visit frequently, more than likely a few times a week!

How To Decorate a Victorian Home?

I’ve decided that I will stop worrying about the outside of the house for now. I can’t do anything about Mother Nature. The roof will be done when it gets done:)
So, instead of obsessing about things I can’t do anything about, at the moment, I think that I should start thinking about the inside of the house. We have all of the original woodwork and most of the fixtures, but pulling it all together, is a real challenge for me. I am very challenged, in the area of decorating. I want things what look like they might have been around when the house was built, but I also need things that are sturdy and practical. The boys are really hard on furniture, lol, not to mention the dog and cats.
So, let’s start with the master bedroom. Right now, I have a very generic head-board & footboard, mis-matched dressers, 2 bookshelves and a nightstand. Nothing matches. The curtains are a bit on the tacky side as well.
I did find some sites, that have a lot of the sort of nice furniture I have in mind, but some of it was just way to nice to even think about getting while the boys are still so young.
Have you ever been just looking around, with no intent to actually buy anything, and then, you see something, that you must have?
That happened to me. I think I must have seen about 200 things I must have, right now. I will of course, show Bill, but the odds are that right now with the roof being done, is not going to want to go on a shopping spree. That’s why wish lists were created.:) I can’t wait to show Bill and see what he thinks. I have a feeling he would lean more towards the wood furniture, we will see.
I really like more simple things, when decorating. Actually, I should probably say I would like more simple, tasteful things, if I did actually decorate.
There are just so many things I want! Really beautiful, antique looking dressers and night stands, that if the boys ever move out, I want!
So, If I am getting a new bed, I am going to need new bedding. Found some!  But, I am not sure if we will actually be getting anything new right now.
Looking that those reminded me that, I have a wedding present to buy. I really don’t know what I should get the happy couple. Comforter set? I don’t think I really know their tastes well enough to pick out sheets. But, maybe something useful?
Picking out gifts for other people is difficult. I have a hard time picking things out for myself. At least I was able to get several good ideas, that I can sit down and discuss with Bill. Plus, I am not thinking about rain.

Did you know she had bedding?  I had no idea, but I like it.  I love the prices!  Really, I love them.  I think I paid more for the set I am using now, and it is not half as nice.  I am a beige, browns and red sort of person, but I really don’t like having to pay outrageous amounts for a bedding set that is going to see a lot of use.  Looking that those reminded me that,  I have a wedding present to buy.  I really don’t know what I should get the happy couple.  Comforter set?  I don’t think I really know their tastes well enough to pick out sheets.  But, maybe something useful?  How about http://www.become.com/laptop-bed-desk.  I know a lot of people who need laptop desks.   If I owned a laptop, I would want one.

Rain, Rain Go AWAY

Well, it is raining, again. Figures.  So, that means, no one will show up to work on the roof, gutters, soffits or fascia.  Wonderful.  Meanwhile, I am stuck in the house to two very bored children.  I would take them out and just let them play in the rain, except there is thunder and lightning, so I imagine that isn’t the best of ideas.

So, we will sit, sit, sit, and we will not like it, not one little bit.

Okay, so I wish we would sit, but that is not going to happen.  Evan will start harassing the Dog, She will get all excited and start messing with Mama Cat.  Who will, in turn, start assaulting the dog.  There is about a 70% chance of blood today.  Did you know Tide with Bleach will remove blood stains?  Just thought I should share.  Maybe I should close Mama up in the laundry room so she won’t get annoyed and mangle the dog?  Maybe I should go on a tropical vacation with lots of fruity drinks and men with an awesome tan and a nice accent?  Fat Chance.

Anyway, other than the lack of work being done on the house, no much to tell.  I finished books 1-10 of the True Blood/Sookie Stackhouse series.  Very good overall.  I just wish I had book 11:)  So, being done with that, I am checking out R.A. Salvatore & is son’s trilogy, which will probably turn out to be better for the boys to read in a few years.  But, Drizzit makes an appearance so I’ll read them anyway.  I also have some Terry Pratchett, to get me through till the next library run.

It is supposed to rain, pretty much through next Wednesday.  But, supposedly someone will be working on the roof Saturday.  It is supposed to rain then too.

I have no doctor’s appointments in my immediate future, so that is a wonderful thing.

Other than that, can’t wait till Tomorrow.  Bill will be home Friday & Saturday.

Mother Nature Wins Again!

Well, Monkey Poo!  Its going to rain, again.  The forecast is calling for rain, pretty much from today till next Wednesday.  The roofers didn’t show up yesterday.  It was a very beautiful day.  Bill is a little irritated.  When the contractor did show up Monday, he started working on the roof, by himself.  The result..a very small area, torn off, decked, covered with the all-weather sealer or whatever it is.  But, if you go into my attic and look up where he was working, I can see several little points of light.  Holes. Nail Holes in my roof.  I have enough holes in the roof.  That is why we are getting it done in the first place.  I really don’t want to have to deal with the roof leaking like a colander when it starts to rain.  I only have so many buckets. So, when he called today, and began trying to explain why 30 guys would not be showing up at my house, I had him call Bill.

I guess I’ll go up in the attic, which I seriously dislike, and see what I can rig with some plastic sheeting and strategically placed buckets.  I can get pretty creative when I need to.  I just would rather do that, than have the ceiling fall in on our heads while we are sleeping.  The ceilings are still Plaster.

Got the results on the last mammogram & ultrasound.  The boobies are fine.  It appears to be scar tissue.  Not a real shocker.  I excel at producing scar tissue.  Just another of my many talents:)

That pretty much it.  I don’t really have any issues other than the roof.  I am on the last True Blood book and I must say, I am liking it.  Very happy so far with how things are panning out with Sookie & everyone.  I hope the author writes more books 🙂

My spinach, peas, basil and chives are coming up nicely, as well as a few of the Sweet Williams I planted.  But, the frost seems to have killed the green beans.  Bill took that pretty well, he said he wanted to plant more of the yellow wax beans anyway, since they were so hardy last year.  They held up very well to several pretty major hail storms.

So, that’s that. We’ll get more planted this weekend.  I am done waiting on the roofers.  I have things to do and I am tired of waiting on everyone else to get their things done.  I will plant my 200 lavender seeds, 100 cleome and all of the morning glories and moon flowers.  I might even be in the mood to get my tomatoes started.
